Feel Better Again with Neural Therapy

Neural therapy (also known as acupoint injection therapy) is an effective treatment approach for a wide variety of conditions that could potentially enable you to throw away those pain pills and avoid steroid shots, PRP injections, or even surgery.

What is Neural Therapy?

Neural therapy involved low dose injection of local anesthetics, such as Procaine (aka Novocaine) into autonomic ganglia, peripheral nerves, scars, glands, acupuncture points, trigger points, skin, and other tissues.  The goal is to reset the autonomic nervous system and facilitate the "rewiring" of disrupted communication pathways in the body.

The autonomic nervous system impacts every function of our bodies. It affects pain perception, heart rate, blood pressure, smell, circulation, and everything else.  Damaged tissue can lead to disruptions in this system, blocking or misrouting the network, so to speak.  Acupuncture looks to help the body restore homeostasis, which promotes healing on both physical and emotional levels.  Neural therapy does the same thing, except it is more potent.

Neural therapy is acupuncture on steroids--it provides faster relief from pain and the effects often last longer.

Where did Neural Therapy Come From?

Neural therapy was developed in Germany in 1925 by a pair of medical doctors--Dr. Ferdinand Huneke and his brother.  Most physicians in the United States are unfamiliar with it, but it is widely used in the rest of the Western world.  In fact, an estimated 35% of German doctors use neural therapy in their practices.

What can Neural Therapy Treat?

Neural therapy is effective for many of the same sorts of conditions as acupuncture.  For example:

  • Back pain
  • Sports injuries
  • Chronic pain
  • Restricted movement
  • Numbness
  • Thyroid issues
  • Depression/PTSD
  • Trigeminal neuralgia
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Digestive disorders like IBS or Crohn's Disease
  • Autoimmune conditions such as Hashimoto's Disease or lupus
  • Chronic fatigue and adrenal dysfunction

Procaine or Lidocaine?

As mentioned above, neural therapy involves injecting weak doses of local anasthetics in specific locations.  There are two primary options currently in use:  procaine and lidocaine.  Both can be effective, but at Primal Tao Movement, we prefer procaine.  Procaine has a number of positive features:

  • It is bacteriostatic (interferes with bacterial reproduction)
  • It has antidepressant effects- it works as a weak MAO inhibitor and inhibits serotonin oxidation
  • It is broken down in the plasma
  • It has a short half-life of 20 to 30 minutes

In contrast, lidocaine has a longer half-life, is broken down in the liver, does not have capillary vasodilation effects, does not stabilize mast cell membranes, and has a weaker bacteriostatic effect.

What are the Risks?

Neural therapy is generally safe and effective.  Used with correct dosages, the risk from procaine is exceptionally small.  For therapeutic purposes, solutions with only 0.5% to 1% procaine have proven effective.

The primary risks are from allergic reactions and hypersensitivity.  We use high quality procaine from Germany which uses benzyl alcohol as a preservative.  Check with a physician prior to treatment to rule out any allergies to this chemical.  In addition, we do a skin test before treatment as a separate check for allergic reaction.

Combining Neural Therapy with Other Therapies

At Primal Tao Movement, we combine neural therapy with acupuncture and cupping to enhance treatment outcomes.  It is also an excellent add-on treatment to other therapeutic approaches, such as nutritional therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and more.
