Cupping Therapy

One of the therapies used at Primal Tao Movement is trigger point decompression therapy (aka "cupping").  You may have seen the dark circular marks from this treatment on the skin of high profile athletes like swimmer Michael Phelps and gymnast Alex Naddour.  This extraordinary technique has found a home in modern sports medicine and physical therapy, but its origins go back thousands of years.  Similar approaches continue to be widely used by traditional healers across many cultures. Trigger point decompression therapy has been embraced by elite athletes, top sports medicine professionals, and informed alternative medicine providers around the world.

What is Cupping Used For?

At Primal Tao Movement, we have used cupping to successfully treat clients for the following conditions:

  • Chronic and acute back pain
  • Head and neck pain
  • Sprained ankles
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Hip bursitis
  • Tennis/golf elbow
  • Numbness/tingling in lower extremities
  • Whiplash
  • Sciatica
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Falls, concussions
  • Unstable joints from hypermobility
  • Rotator cuff injuries and injured knees
  • Costochondritis
  • Frozen shoulder
  • SI joing (tailbone) pain
  • Stiffness or pain from surgical scar  tissue
  • Poor posture
  • Chronic and acute tendinitis
  • Bowel obstruction

How Does Cupping Work?

In contrast to treatment approaches that manipulate your muscles or your skeletal structure, decompression therapy works on the connective tissues and fascia that surround, support, and link your bones, muscles, and internal organs.  The therapy involves playing glass, silicone, or plastic suction cups in strategic locations.  It's like massage, except it pulls on your tissue, instead of pushing. Sometimes the cups are left in place, and other times they are slid around affected regions to enhance the effects. By mobilizing and manipulating the fascia, cupping can relieve pain and restore range of motion, so you can move more like a kid again.  Results may be apparent after only a few sessions, and the benefits often last for months or longer.
